Welcome to before breakfast a production of iHeartRadio.

Good morning. This is Laura. Welcome to the before breakfast podcast. Today's tip is to consider ways that things might be reused rather than creating more garbage or even putting something in the recycling bin.

Many of us are well-versed with the phrase reduce reuse recycle. These three hours are about making environmentally responsible choices. But as I've been learning from a Dementors books junkyard planet and second hand recycling uses a lot of energy and in many cases processes that use potentially harmful substances recycling is better than using new materials for sure, but it is not a Costless Enterprise reusing something on the other hand can be a more purely Green Solution.

anytime we extend something's useful life or being more gentle on the planet and probably on our wallets and by extension with our schedules to

How do I get in the habit of reusing stuff first if you are buying new stuff by it with an eye toward a long life certain brands are known for better quality. Don't buy a shirt that you know will fall apart on the second wash. Look for furniture that is well-constructed second. Learn how to repair. Can you sew a button back on the scene? A lot of spots can be removed with prompt treatment seats can be recovered in Furniture can be sanded down and restained your painted if the repair is beyond your capability like shoe resoling or perhaps with electronics paying for pro may still be less than the cost of a new high-quality replacement.

3rd, if you are done with something look for a way to give it a new home while donating to places like Goodwill is great and I try to do that whenever possible you are still counting on the right person will come again to a thrift store and finding your castoffs you could help with efficiency a bit by joining a by nothing community on Facebook and giving your good condition old items to specific people who want the specific Goods if your old goods are in really good condition, you might be able to sell them and second hand Market places. You might also commit to buying second-hand or asking for items from people whenever possible rather than buying new. I have a great Nearly New stroller and highchair thanks to other people's generosity. The world has a lot of stuff in it an interesting chair that you take from a neighbor who's moving can create a vignette in your foyer as well as a new one and it cost nothing.

Finally look for creative ways to reuse items in your own home. My daughter had me cut up a plastic water bottle the other day so she could turn it into a doll bed. Any piece of paper can be used more than once mailing envelopes and boxes can be reused with a little work with five kids in my family. We shop in the hand-me-down closet before our shopping the store. It's been really fun to see my baby wear the same shirts that my teenager or many years ago.

When you don't have to spend your time earning money to buy stuff, you can free up a lot of capacity in your life. And yes, sometimes new items are necessary in fun, but more stuff can be reused than you might imagine 10 file Ziploc bags. If you wash smell grocery bags just make a game of seeing how long you can keep something out of the landfill. How many times can it be used that can be more satisfying than you might think?

In the meantime, this is Laura. Thanks for listening. And here's to making the most of our time.
