Good morning. This is Laura. Welcome to the new corner office the podcast where we share strategies for thriving in the new world of work or location and hours are more flexible than in the past two days to is about how to handle weekend work without well completely losing your weekend.

00:01:13
One of the hazards of working from home is losing the boundaries between work and the rest of Life. A lot of people have discovered this over the past few months one survey from JDP founder of people newly working from home a majority reported working on nights and weekends more frequently. Sometimes this is because people's managers don't observe boundaries, but other times it's because well, hey you're already at your workplace. It seems easy enough to get caught up on email you have down time when you do otherwise be watching TV. And so that's fine. I track my time and I know that I often work on weekends. My weekdays can be interrupted and if my kids are busy on weekends. Well time is time. However, you might want to be a little judicious about it. So she knows how to work from home on weekends without spending your entire weekend working at home.

00:02:07
First make yourself a very clear priority list. Don't work just to work. What do you hope to get done before Monday morning?

00:02:16
We can still be a good time for a longer-term or speculative projects or if you're behind because of a midweek emergency. They can also help you stay on track, but you won't get through a 1,000 email backlog every weekend. So don't set that as a goal. Maybe just returned anything you intend to return from the last week and let anything before that go on a recent weekend after returning from a few weeks at the beach. My weekend goal was to record 10 short podcast episodes. When I was done. I was done second give yourself a window for doing these tasks. This serves a few purposes first work expands to fill the available space or more efficient when space is more limited.

00:03:02
Second. It keeps work from always being an option. That way you don't feel guilty. Would you relax or hang out with your family? There's a time for work namely Sunday evening from 4 to 7 p.m. And now is not that time.

00:03:17
Then do what you need to do in order to make your working be okay with the people around you if you've got young kids your spouse is not automatically obligated to cover especially if he or she covers more of the work week to what would make it worthwhile to him or her maybe you cover an equivalent number for powers for your partner or give this person a few free hours to do personal project. Your kids might be more amenable to your work session if they know you're planning to take them to the park right afterwards a significant other might be okay with you working Saturday if Sunday is open make sure you figure this out.

00:03:54
Finally realize you may not have to work on weekend. I've sometimes fallen into the habit of assuming I can get caught up over the weekend. So I don't press hard on Thursday and Friday. If you view we can work as more of a last resort or only for big projects not dated a stuff. This can light a fire under you to use real work hours. You spend a bit less time surfing the web and a bit more time getting stuff done. That's a smart idea whether you work on weekends or not.

00:04:28
In the meantime, this is Laura. Thanks for listening. And here's the succeeding in the new corner office.
