Welcome to before breakfast a production of iHeartRadio.

00:00:53
Good morning. This is Laura. Welcome to the before breakfast podcast. Today's tip is to remember that it's your schedule. So own it.

00:01:05
When people tell me about the challenges and frustrations and their schedule they often have lengthy explanations for why things aren't working is he I can't get anything done because my day is chopped up with meetings or I can't pick up painting again, which I used to love because the only time I have to myself is after my kids are in bed, and then I'm exhausted or how about this one. I really want to exercise on Saturdays, but my in-laws come over in the morning and by the time we say goodbye, it's too hot to go for a run.

00:01:36
We all have our stories reasons that our schedule isn't working. Sometimes it feels like these rules and obligations are carved in stone, but they're probably not it's your schedule. So we bold about making it work for you and no that's not selfish because in general what truly works for you ultimately wax for your family your employer and your community because they win when you can function as your best self.

00:02:08
What is the first step to making your schedule work for you is to rethink how you respond to schedule request?

00:02:16
People feel obligated to accept to work or social appointment at whatever time is offered even if the time is difficult the thinking is that if there's no actual conflict. Well, there's no good reason to refuse an offer time. Guess what you can rethink this notion. You do want to be considerate of other schedules, but that doesn't mean saying yes to a time just because you are technically free for instance if a friend suggest talking on Friday night at 9 p.m. After her kids go to bed, but you hope to relax with your partner that it's okay to suggest a weekday after her kids bedtime instead and see what she says.

00:02:59
If a colleague proposes a meeting at 10, but you were planning to buckle down on a big project then it's okay to ask if he'd be available in the afternoon and just because you usually do something at a certain time doesn't mean you have to do this forever perhaps our aspiring Runners relatives would be happy to come over a little later and get an update about the morning run.

00:03:22
The people who want to spend time with you for professional or personal reasons generally want the best for you. They are not out to hijack your schedule. They may have more flexibility in their own schedules. Then you assume you can look for X that work well for both of you

00:03:41
So the next time you are asked to do something at a time that isn't great for you here. This gentle reminder that you are in charge of your own schedule. You can always ask for something else often. You'll find a mutually convenient time that makes you and the other person happy and everyday is a great day for that.

00:04:04
In the meantime, this is Laura. Thanks for listening. And here's to making the most of our time.
